This course is an introduction to the Y14.5M-1994 and Y14.5-2009 standards focusing on the what, when, why, and especially the how of GD&T. This course is designed to bring you a basic and operational level of understanding by using visual aids such as our GD&T videos.

After you have taken GD&T – Fundamentals, you may want to move to the next level, GD&T – Advanced.

TARGET AUDIENCE COURSE LENGTH      
This program is designed for anyone who designs, drafts, engineers, purchases, manufactures, estimates, or inspects parts and assemblies. Particular emphasis is placed on those who design and manufacture, and those responsible for quality. Prerequisite: A working understanding of technical drawings (perspectives, sections, details, etc.) Print Reading for Industry workshop is suggested.   Length: 2 days or customizable

Reasons for Attending:

Your drawings have GD&T symbols on them (or they should)! If you have been attempting to work with GD&T, and you lack the confidence to specify, or are having trouble interpreting the specifications, this GD&T training is for you. Using GD&T improperly can be worse than not using it at all.

This program is a complete introduction to the Y14.5M-1994 and Y14.5-2009 standards.  In this GD&T Training we focus on the “what, when, why, and how” of GD&T. The main goal of the GD&T materials is to bring all participants to a common, basic and operational level of understanding. Our GD&T Training is a thorough introduction to those with a little to a moderate level of experience with GD&T. If certification is your goal, consider completing GD&T – Advanced as well.

 

Objectives:

  • Introduce the concepts and the some of the language of the Y14.5M-1994 and Y15.4-2009 standards
  • Enable participants to understand each of the Y14.5M-1994 and Y15.4-2009 standard's symbols
  • Bring participants to a fundamental understanding of datum reference frames
  • Understand the definitions and the effects of material condition modifiers
  • Begin to prepare the participants for the ASME GDTP certification exam

  • Objectives and basic overview
  • History of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
  • Comparison of the "old" methods (Coordinate Dimensioning and Tolerancing to the Geometric Dimensioning approach
  • Demonstration of GD&T's Strengths and Advantages:
    • As a Design Tool
    • As a Manufacturing Aid
    • As an overall Communications Facilitator
  • General Rules of Dimensioning and Drafting per the Standard:
    • Tolerance Zones
    • Definition
    • Comparison to Existing Systems
  • GD&T Symbology:
    • Definitions of all 14 geometric controls
    • Modifiers and other symbols
  • "Bonus" Tolerances
    • Definition
    • How to take advantage of them
    • Datum shift
  • Datum Reference Frames:
    • Definition
    • Proper Construction and Selection
